Action for the conservation of cherry throated tanager
Five days planning the future of a critically endangered species.
The Cherry-throated Tanager (Nemosia rourei) is endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and is considered one of the most endangered birds in the world. As far as is known, there are only 11 individuals of the species remaining in two locations exclusively in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. With so few individuals, the species needs a great collective effort to promote urgent actions to prevent its extinction.
Therefore, Instituto Marcos Daniel (IMD) and Transmissora Caminho do Café SA, joined Parque das Aves, Instituto Claravis, the Species Survival Center - Brazil and the National Center for Bird Conservation and Research (CEMAVE / ICMBio) to evaluate and outline a conservation strategy for the recovery of this species. The initiative is also part of the National Action Plan for Atlantic Forest Birds coordinated by CEMAVE and the workshop will be facilitated by representatives of CEMAVE and the Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG) of the IUCN SSC Center for Species Survival Brazil (CSS Brazil)
This event will be fundamental to guide and support the continuity of the actions that are already being developed by the Cherry-throated Tanager Conservation Program, which is coordinated by Instituto Marcos Daniel and Transmissora Caminho do Café. The recommendations that will be formulated at the event will be based on consensus of specialists obtained through a methodology tried and tested in planning workshops around the world.
Fifty participants will be gathered, including specialists of great international renown, as well as representatives of environmental agencies, local communities and NGOs, to discuss the threats and propose actions for the conservation of the Cherry-throated Tanager.
We will use the methodologies and processes of the Conservation Planning Specialist Group, tested on various species to carefully and systematically evaluate possible integrated management strategies, as well as to develop actions that will be built through consensus.
This event will produce a document containing the conservation actions to be carried out in the program, including recommendations for integrated management. Furthermore, we hope that the event will serve as a springboard for the dissemination of the species and its critical situation and, above all, that it will act as a catalyst for conservation efforts directed at the species by bringing together participants from different sectors, at the local, national and international levels.
To save this Critically Endangered species, we need to have everyone working together – including conservationists, farmers, civil servants, zoos, researchers and companies.
We are very happy to promote this important event, and we hope that it will bring new hope for the Cherry-throated Tanager.
